How to Quit Smoking

After a full week of helping people off the poison sticks, I've noticed another pattern to why some people find it easy to get off the cigarettes and others do not.

It's so simple once we think about it. Not every body quits in the same way. Have you noticed how some will use patches while others will go cold turkey?

A smoker who is predominately smoking to satisfy their physical addiction to cigarette smoking is not going to quit in the same way as a full time habit smoker or a stress, tension, or social smoker will quit there are up to six quitting styles.

When do you find it harder not to smoke?

a. This is purely habit. You might find it difficult to imagine your self as a non smoker. It's most important for you to just break the cycle, throw them out and learn to adapt to your decision. You have a choice, it may seem strange at first, having said that, you are in the best position to go cold turkey.

b. This is pure physical chemical addiction. Day 3 off cigarettes will be your worst. After one week of not smoking your body has beaten the addiction and all nicotine has left the body

c. Stress and tension smoking means that there is something or multiple factors in your life that you need to face. We fear what we do not face. You need to be able to make a decision on what you want to change in your life, then break it up into smaller more achievable pieces with regular breaks. It will do you the world of good.

d. You are an enjoyment / relaxation smoker. You need another way to socialize / wind down and have fun at the end of the day / week that does not involve smoking. Still see your friends, just plan ahead and ask yourself the question, “What do I really want to do with my life?” You need fulfillment on a personal life journey level.

e. Too much energy, not enough to do. You need to take the time to write yourself a list of what it is that you would really like to do with yourself

f. Too much to do, not enough energy. Again, you need to ask yourself if what you are doing is really what you want to do. If it's not, maybe you do not need to do a complete 180 on yourself.

Incense Burning

Who likes to burn incense? I guess lots of people do. I remember smelling that sickening sweet smell at the university I attended in the Midwest. There were two guys in particular, we'll come them TK and RW, who had a love fest with incense. Well, it was more like an attraction with something else, but we will not go there. Needless to say, their doors were locked all the time. It was like something out of an old Cheech and Chong movie with many different types of aromas coming out from around their dormitory door.

Needless to say, I'm not around much incense anymore. There are not bums hanging out smoking “stuff” that needed to be covered up by the scent of other herb burning. With that said, there is a class of people I'm around who still burn incense and do so regularly – they're cigarette smokers, um … let me clarify, regular tobacco cigarettes smokers. Smokers always hope the fragrance of the incense will cover the bitter smell associated with tobacco smoking. But is this a good idea? After all, why add to the floating debris in the air? Who wants to inhale the cigarette emission and the burning incense particles?

Recently, people have asked this very question. Should smokers be burning incense also? Does their risk for developing lung cancer escalate when adding the burning incense to the environment? One thing to remember is that incense emission is known to carry a significant level of pollutants. So there is already a risk of breathing some bad stuff with incense burning.

The researchers discovered that burning incense did not increase the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers, but it does increase the smoker's risk. Synergistic is what they called the relationship between incense and smoking tobacco. To make the outcome worse, the risk for lung cancer was still higher if radon was present with the smoking and incense burning – a very dangerous cocktail to be sure. One I should hope to avoid.

I wonder how many people will read this article and decide to get their radon levels checked in their home instead of quitting smoking? This is why I call some people the 'path of least resistance people'. Hey, I consider myself one too. We all are to some extent. We all want the easy fix or the quick reduction of risk. For smokers, the effect of nicotine and the brain is quite dramatic. It's like pumpkin pie and me. If I can eat as much pumpkin pie as I want and all I have to do is take a pill to keep my heart risk managed, then I'll take the pill.

We all know that people are going to smoke. Some of these same people also like incense and so will continue to burn it, despite the increased risk of lung cancer. There's not much you can do about that. But if you are serious about making healthy choices, then you should stop smoking altogether. If you can not do that, then you should at least stop burning incense while you smoke. At least, that's what the medical research tells us.
