Why should smokers, stop smoking? It seems an obvious question, but it is a good idea before embarking on the stop smoking process to list the benefits and advantages of becoming a non-smoker. The list should be committed to paper and kept close by and taken out and scrutinized whenever nicotine cravings seem overwhelming. It does not harm to be reminded because you are trying to quit this deplorable habit. So here goes my own personal list which provided comfort when I gave up smoking and helped to steady my resolve when about to succumb to the deadly foe- nicotine addiction.

Smoking And Disease

The health question: Yes, smoking is bad for your health. The diseases associated with smoking tobacco make for a long list. Smoking and the associated cancer risk is well recognized by the medical authorities and all but the most optimistic of smokers. Most people when they think of smoking and cancer automatically think of lung cancer. But there are a host of other cancers that have been linked to smoking, including pancreatic and breast cancer. There is no surprise that smoking causes lung disease. The chemicals in smoke actively damage sensitive lung tissue. The end result of this damage is a nasty condition called emphysema. Emphysema is a disease which progressively destroys lung tissue; sufferers find it hard to draw breath. The disease is insidious and initially sufferers may be unaware of their condition. Smoking is a significant risk factor in developing heart disease. Smoking causes atherosclerosis which is a fancy medical term for a fatty build up in the arteries. If the fatty build up occurs in the blood vessels supplying the heart these vessels may become blocked resulting in a heart attack. Blood vessels affected elsewhere in the body can lead to stroke, blindness and gangrene. Well, if that list of smoking related diseases does not make you stop smoking, I do not know what will. And remember; when you stop smoking the relative risk of these diseases begin to decline.

Money Up In Smoke

Smoking is an expensive habit. In hard financial times finding the money to buy cigarettes can be a problem. Sadly, many smokers will go without essentials in order to fund their addiction. Saving money is often a big incentive to stop smoking and it is surprising how it all adds up. After a year you are looking at serious money. Put the money into a separate bank account so it does not get spent on other things- call it your stop smoking fund. At the end of the year treat yourself to a fun holiday. As I recall, this particular item was at the top my stop smoking list.

Fancy a Smoke In The Park?

Where can you smoke these days? Not at work, that's for sure. During the day you can see the smokers huddled around the doorways of their office blocks. It can not be fun in the freezing cold, wind and rain. And it is only going to get more restrictive. Many towns and cities are introducing smoking bans in their parks and municipal areas. People are becoming less tolerant of smokers and are more willing to criticize your habit to your face especially now that second hand smoke is also considered a health hazard. On my list: “The social pariah effect”.

Smelly Smokers

The smell: Is there anyone out there who actually likes the smell of cigarette smoke? Stale smoke is even worse. It clings to your hair and clothes and worst of all, your breath. Few smokers actually realize how bad their breath smells after they have smoked a cigarette.

Stop Smoking

This is turning into quite a long list and to be fair I can not actually remember all the items committed to my stop smoking list; it's been a while since I quit. By the time you have taken it out of your pocket and read it through you would have forgotten that you wanted a cigarette. Well not quite, but at least it's a start and anything, and I mean anything, that helps to stop smoking is worth a try.

Plan a Strategy. OK this sounds like too much work but we are not talking about creating a 10 Page Document. What I am suggesting is to plan ahead as timing is the key, do not try to quit just before a big night out on the town. If you have holidays coming up in a month or two then do not stop yet plan ahead and quit when you are under less stress such as when you are on your holidays

Tip # 3

Look for Someone to keep you on Track. This does sound a lot like psychological babble but it has been proven to work. If you engage a close friend to help you it can be especially helpful and even more so if they have already quit themselves as they understand you. On the other side of the coin if you have a partner that also wants to quit then do it together.

Tip # 4

Make sure you get plenty of Sleep and Rest. This is a big one when quitting and is overlooked far to often. It is important that you get plenty of rest as the body is going to need it, plus the more time you are sleep the less time you have to worry about smoking.

Tip # 5

Make it a Target to Quit for Good. This does sound a bit silly but many people actually do not think about quitting for good they simply say “this weekend I am going to quit.” Now it does sound like they are quitting but the subconscious mind has heard this before and it does just that and allows you to quit for the weekend but come Monday you are right back into smoking again.

Tip # 6

Get Rid of Smoke related things. This is almost the hardest thing to do as your subconscious mind wont want you to do this. Your subconscious mind is already having in excess of 40,000 thoughts per day and many of those thoughts are initiated by what is going on in the outside world. So the moment you have thoughts the day before you quit smashing the ash trays, cutting up any keep smokers, cleaning the house to make it smell fresh your subconscious mind is going to get ape on you with all sorts of thoughts. Such as you better not smash that ash tray you will want it again, last time you failed to quit, its only going to cost you more money replacing it …

Final Suggestion

Above all remember to have fun with this process as the more serious you take it the harder it will be. Your mind works at a rate of 40,000 thoughts a day so there is a lot going on that you are unaware of so anything you can do to help is important. Smoking and Acetaldehyde Addiction

Acetaldehyde is Addictive

Smokers acknowledge that they are added to nicotine. Even the tobacco companies these days are admitting that nicotine in cigarettes is addictive. What is not widely known is that other chemicals present in tobacco smoke are also addictive and recent research has identified the chemical acetaldehyde as a potent addictive compound. Acetaldehyde is not a chemical naturally present in tobacco however, when burnt a proportion of the sugars present in the tobacco became converted to acetaldehyde. Not only is acetaldehyde addictive, it is also known carcinogen and therefore implicated in causing cancer.

Nicotine Has a Friend

Experiments in rats have shown that whilst nicotine and acetaldehyde when administratively singly are both addictive, when combined they act synergistically. What this means is that nicotine and acetaldehyde interact, reinforcing and enhancing their addictive effects. This may explain why nicotine replacement therapy exhibits only a 20% quit rate as a smoking cessation aid. Furthermore, studies involving denicotinised cigarettes have shown that these cigarettes reduce tobacco cravings and withdrawal, thus indicating that other compounds present in tobacco are addictive in nature.

Smoking and Drinking

The addictive properties of acetaldehyde may also explain the known association between drinking alcohol and smoking. As alcohol is broken down in the liver it produces acetaldehyde. It is well known that smokers who have just given up find it harder when drinking. Acetaldehyde is also responsible for the 'alcohol flush' and some of the symptoms of the classic hangover. In fact acetaldehyde may also be an important factor in the addictive properties of alcohol, leading to alcoholism.

Additions to Tobacco

As mentioned earlier, acetaldehyde is by-product of burning sugars which just happens to be one of the 599 chemicals routinely added to smoking tobacco by the tobacco companies. These chemicals are supposedly safe and this may well be the case when in the unburnt state. Once burnt many of these chemicals transform into compounds some which have properties which are known to be harmful and some whose properties are unknown, or not fully understood. These additives are said to fulfill a multitude of roles. They increase tobacco's shelf, slow burn rates, enhance flavor, facilitate nicotine delivery and reduce the harshness of the smoke. The tobacco companies say that sugar is added to tobacco to enhance flavor, although they are well aware of the addictive properties of acetaldehyde, particularly when acting in concert with nicotine; research conducted by Phillip Morris conclusively demonstrated this relationship. Should we be shocked or even surprised? The tobacco industry is big business, and from their perspective it makes good business sense to increase their products 'attractiveness' to the consumer.

Other Chemical Candidates?

So it seems that nicotine has a powerful ally in the realm of chemical addiction and both chemicals are present in tobacco smoke. Is it possible that other chemical candidates present in tobacco have an addictive role? As there are 4000 chemicals present in tobacco it is highly conceivable that this is the case and you can be assured that the tobacco companies will have identified them first.

Don’t Pick Up the Habit

Have you ever wanted to quit a bad habit? I finally got my kid to stop picking his nose. It only took two years of brow-beating before he put his finger back in the holster. But I did not give up, I kept on him. I think people who try to stop smoking could learn something from my kid. I know it sounds weird, but bear with me and I hope it starts to make sense.

First of all, I had to convince my kid that picking his nose was not acceptable and it should be stopped. Smokers need to adopt a similar philosophy where the act of smoking is deemed unacceptable, both from a health and social standpoint. This may mean the smoker needs to change their surroundings and start hanging out where smoking is not culturally accepted. Perhaps, they could stay out of the bars and start eating out at non-smoking restaurants. Just an idea.

Next, I had to tell my kid there would be a consequence to his smoking. He would lose a privilege or be put in timeout. A smoker must understand the negative consequences of their habit too. The hundreds of smoking related illnesses may be a good starting point. Then there is the financial costs related to smoking.

Finally, I was there to constantly remind and encourage my child to put the finger away. Listen, smoking is a tough habit to break. The behavioral component of the smoking habit is well under-appreciated. Add to this the physiological addiction related to nicotine and you've got some kind of challenge. What better way to overcome those odds than with having people on your side to encourage you and help you when those cravings hit their peak. Having a sound support system in place can really up the odds for people wanting to quit.

Most every smoker wants to quit at some time during their life. Many “try and relapse” only to “try and relapse” again. I read a medical journal that detailed how it can take an average of up to 7 quit attempts before a smoker finally is able to stop. If that is true, then why would you give up after only trying once or twice? You may be in that 7 or 8 quit-attempt group. If so, then who cares, right? At least you did it and that's what is important.

It takes a plan to stop and it takes help. I'm a respiratory therapist and I've seen what smoking can do to people. It robs them of their health and their lifestyle. Many are stuck in their beds at home, unable to get out and enjoy their golden years like they had hoped. Listen, if I can get my kid to get his finger out of his nose than I know you can be successful too. It may take time, like it did for my kid. But through dedication and commitment, just about anything is possible.

So do not give up. Keep trying. Remember that if my boy can quit, so can you.

Stress and the Pain of Smoking Cigarettes

During infancy a child under stress normally reaches for a parent to find some comfort. Stress to a child is obviously a lot different then that of an adult, a child could be under stress because he or she does not have the toy they want, they might want a nappy change or they are over tired.

Overcoming Stress and Anxiety

For a child overcoming the pain of stress and anxiety in most circumstances can be achieved with a bit of guidance, and in many situations the effects of stress is almost always going to also be related to growing and learning.

It would be irresponsible to hand a child a cigarette and advise him or her to take a few puffs. But funny as that may seem I have seen a few alarming videos on the net where children as young as two are smoking, but that's a matter for another time. Children do not typically pick up a smoke to overcome pain and anxiety

Where is the Connection with Stress and Smoking?

The problem for smokers is that the act of smoking becomes a link with the emotion of stress. Of course this is not what happens in the beginning, as in the early days when a smoker is learning to be a smoker these links have not yet been formed in the subconscious mind.

We all have a natural inbuilt ability to help us increase stress; however with some of the pressure of modern society it becomes increasingly difficult to find this release, so our bodies begin to look for other ways to increase the release it is looking for.

So in the beginning the subconscious mind of a smoker begins to learn at an incredible rate, so every moment smokers have a smoke the activity and the emotions being experienced at that time are chalked up and remembered. So the next time the smoker has a smoke when experiencing the same emotion and or activity it places another chalk mark against it.

Stress becomes linked with Smokes

Then as we say the rest is history … After the subconscious mind chalks up enough events and circumstances where the activity of smoking and stress has occurred at the same time a natural link is formed in our minds.

Our bodies experience the rush of nicotine and the intake of air deep into our lungs, so we experience the calming effects and this then becomes our natural fix in times of stress. Regardless without the fix obtained from smoking is only felt for a short period of time it still becomes an instant response in times of stress and anxiety, our subconscious minds have no choice but to present us with the activity of smoking as a way to relate the stress we are under.

The only option we have available to us is to release the emotional links in our minds with stress and smoking.

If you can do that you'll have the power to elevate your life above the addiction and one day you'll feel like throwing away that pack of cigarettes in your pocket. The Truth About Nicotine

Smokers (you?) Have been brainwashed to believe that quitting smoking has to be a very difficult process, requiring incredible strengthpower and strength of character to accomplish.

Even the US government supports this concept. All who subscribe to this belief say that nicotine is perhaps the most addictive drug in existence, even more than heroin or cocaine. I have read many papers by highly educated individuals who supply charts and graphs and case studies supporting this postulation.

You may have tried to simply walk away from smoking yourself, and found it so difficult that it has reinforced this belief in you.

Almost every method being sold on the market today points to the nicotine addiction and shows ways to sublimate nicotine addiction with nicotine replacements, deny it with cold turkey methods, or block it with hypnotic suggestions. The rest were needed to fulfill the psychological addiction.

Think of this. What if you were to find a willing test subject that had never used heroin or nicotine.

You put a heroin patch with sufficient amount of the drug to addict on the subject's left arm, and another with nicotine, equally strong, on the right arm, and changed them everyday.

At the end of thirty days, you told the subject that they could now only keep one of the patches for the next thirty days.

Which patch do you think they would opt to keep?


Of course they would keep the heroin patch. The nicotine patch would promote nowhere near the euphoric feelings that the heroin would.

In fact, I do not believe there is any euphoric feeling from ingesting nicotine through any method. You can smoke it (cigarettes and cigars), snort it (snuff), chew it (chewing tobacco), or even inject it. It will not feel like heroin.

The only “good feeling” one gets from their “fix” of nicotine is the relaxation of not needing another dose at the moment.

Hardly worth spending your hard earned money and God given health for, do you think?

What Are the Health Risks of Smoking Cigarettes?
